On November 28, 2025, a special exhibition aimed at redefining the Eastern essence of "abstract" art—"Abstraction Toward the East"—will officially open at the Dunhuang International Convention and Exhibition Center. Organized by Art Granary and co-hosted by the Art Museum of Nanjing University of the Arts, with academic support from the X Museum, the exhibition will run until January 26, 2026.
Curated by Zhang Tao and with Shao Yiyang serving as academic chair, the exhibition brings together works by over twenty prominent artists, including Liang Quan, Zhu Yihong, Ma Kelu, Cao Jigang, Ma Lu, and Tong Zhengang. Rather than merely presenting formal abstraction, the exhibition seeks to transcend the framework of formal autonomy in Western modernism, returning to the origins of Eastern philosophy and artistic logic to explore a creative methodology rooted in the inherent nature of Eastern culture.
In the preface, curator Zhang Tao systematically elaborates on the five core dimensions of the "Eastern Abstract Spiritual System": the realm of "Qi" emphasizing flowing life energy, the participation of "time" that embraces natural changes, the pursuit of experiential realization in the "unity of object and self," the imaginative space emphasized through "blankness," and the poetry rooted in "agrarian civilization." This indicates that the "Eastern essence" explored in the exhibition is not a superficial accumulation of symbols but a spiritual temperament internalized within the creative logic. Like guides, the artists allow the spirit of heaven and earth to manifest in the specific "site" of Dunhuang, a place imbued with profound history and natural power.
"Abstraction Toward the East" strives to demonstrate to the world that, across the vast land of China, the most avant-garde artistic practices may be intimately connected with the oldest wisdom. It aims to delineate a grand system with "Dao-Qi-Heart-Image-Intention-Realm" as its philosophical core, showcasing how it permeates contemporary creation. This exhibition is not merely an artistic display but also a profound cultural dialogue, inviting global audiences to gain insight into how different civilizations explore humanity’s shared spiritual world through art, and to witness the unique and profound value that Eastern wisdom brings to contemporary abstract art.
