Artist Wu Zheren's solo exhibition, "Shifting Silhouettes: Wu Zheren and His Art," will debut at the 798 International Art Exchange Center on March 1, 2025. The exhibition will feature over 20 works by the artist, including his latest series, "Blossoming Abundance " and "8-Interpenetration," which explore the universal themes of time and eternity through the lens of cross-cultural experiences. These works capture a profound sense of deep temporal resonance and a hazy allure, translating shared human experiences onto the canvas. The exhibition, curated by Sheng Wei with Wang Chunchen serving as the academic advisor, will run until March 15, 2025.
Preface
Sheng Wei
At first glance, Wu Zheren's artworks evoke the impression of a scene viewed through embossed glass or the mysterious world beneath the surface of a pond, exuding a hazy, elusive beauty that sparks endless imagination about what lies on the other side of the "glass". However, the vibrant imagery is not static; it is imbued with rhythmic movement, as the images often consist of a series of seemingly repeating symbols that resemble the Arabic numeral "8". These symbols are what animate Wu Zheren's works, making them appear both serene and dynamic.
Thanks to his life and educational experiences in both China and Germany, Wu Zheren encountered the image of the "Celadon Jade Double Bi Disc" from the ancient Hongshan culture in his grandfather's books during his early childhood. Later, the symbol, resembling "8", also reminded him of the oracle bone script and bronze inscriptions for the Chinese character "玄" (meaning "mysterious and profound"). Meanwhile, Wu Zheren, who navigates between Chinese and German cultures, has also found a Western counterpart for this symbol— the Möbius strip, and the infinity symbol "∞" in mathematics.
The eternal cycle of time within the distortion of space coincides with the artist's discoveries in Chinese culture, visually and philosophically.Although culture manifests in various local forms, they all point towards a shared human essence and ideal in the end. Artist Wu Zheren repeatedly writes "8" in his studio, vividly narrating every moment of his creative process. When viewers admire his works in the gallery, they cannot help but feel the tangible passage of "time" or "life". Perhaps this is what lies on the other side of the "glass".
